An introduction to the ancient medium of Byzantine icon painting. The course includes instruction in the authentic traditional techniques of gilding and egg tempera painting together with background information on the history of icons and the meaning underlying the images, their details and their lesser known esoteric aspects.

This course, 'The Mystical Icon,' focuses on the ancient technique of Byzantine iconography. Byzantium was the birthplace of egg tempera panel painting in the 5th Century AD.
